Altavilla Irpina: A Journey Through the Village's History, Legends, and Memories

An immersive educational journey that combines learning with the discovery of the local area.

Altavilla Irpina presents itself as a natural stage where every corner tells a story. The ancient village, perched atop the hill, is a tapestry of memories ranging from folklore to major historical events. Renowned for its deep connection to the tradition of the Pilgrim Martyr Saints, the town offers unique insights into how local devotion and customs have shaped its architecture and social life over the centuries.

Beyond its religious significance, Altavilla holds the charm of a past linked to the mining industry and to distinguished figures who once walked its streets, making the village a place of great cultural and literary interest. Strolling through its center means immersing oneself in an atmosphere suspended between reality and legend—an ideal setting for reflecting on the importance of preserving a community’s roots and intangible heritage.

Programme

8:00 AM | Departure from the Institute

10:00 AM | Guided tour of the historic village of Altavilla Irpina, including the Museum of the People Without History (MuGesS), the birthplace of Saint Alberico Crescitelli, the Baronial Palace, and the Mother Church. The Civic Museum of the People Without History is based on a project to recover traditional Altavilla costumes, launched in the 1990s. Among the museum’s most unique collections is the display of garments recovered from the paupers’ cemetery—belonging to adults and children who died in the 19th century—which have undergone an extraordinary restoration process.

Visitors will be captivated by Altavilla’s cultural heritage, which blends with ancient legends linked to the historic center’s most famous and significant landmarks—such as the long staircase known as “Le cient Rat.”
